Can anyone tell me the history of this inspection vehicle, currently
trolling around the Southern. My usual source doesn't mention it.

Thanks.

Ahm, the SR General Manager's saloon. It started off life as S60755, a
Hastings line DEMU buffet car.

Great, thanks, I thought the slab sided shape looked familiar. It just begs
the question, who was/is Caroline?

Perhaps the GM was a Radio Caroline fan ????

I hear that this is now the only inspection saloon that
Network Rail own, having sold off the maroon-liveried
one to West Coast Railways. Caroline is thus likely to
be seen around the whole country: she's been in the
North West recently, coupled to 37 423.

Seems it has been modified to work push-pull with most
diesels, rather than only Class 33 and 73. When
propelling, the occupants complain that the driver has
pinched the best seat ;-)

Saw her and 37423 at Bristol a couple of weeks ago. Made me jealous of
my MTU HST to commute to work on!

It just so happens that sitting next to my computer (alongside the CJM
wagons book, Bakers Atlas and biscuit tin) is a Platform 5's
Departmental Coaching Stock, 3rd Edition, June 1987. It has a picture

Since its use on the Royal honeymoon train on 29/07/81, TDB 975025 has
become BR's most famous departmental coach. Converted from hastings buffet
car S 60755, TDB 975025 is the Southern Region general manager's saloon and
is picture on 20/09/85 at its home depot of Stewarts Lane.
Big up Peter Fox, whoever he is! ;-)

I would big up if I knew how to do it.

Mind you, the maroon one is still in use as theRailwayCentre.com shows
it as picture of the day today hauled by 20302 & 20304 from York to
Carlisle, presumably on behalf of Network Rail.

This thread is from ten years ago and I believe Mr Fox has since
died, any particular reason for resurrecting it now?
Not complaining, just curious - resurrection of ancient threads
seems to have become a bit of a thing of late, so wondering what's
driving it.

Is the coach now back in a Hastings unit?

No, she’s still an ‘inspection saloon’. Is this the only one still in
mainline service?

Making money.
There are several forum like sites on the WWW that take usenet posts old
and new and put them on a site where people who never heard of or would
know how to use newsnet come across them.
The original posting date is not always made obvious.
The more people who visit such sites the more money they can make from them
even by adverts or possibly mining data.
No proof but I don’t think the people behind such sites are beyond just
picking at random an old thread pirated from newsgroups and marking at as
“latest topic” if things start to get a bit quiet and they need to maintain
interest.

I guess it’s possible also that usenet threads may show up in google search
results.
