Does anyone know where I might find printer's colour numbers for some
of the BR paint colours.

I had a set of drawings that gave the specs for BR Blue and the two
varities of nose-end Yellow, but I'm after the one for Nanking Blue.

TIA,

Try Googling for [BS]"381" or "381C" and "Pantone" and ISTR there are
a couple of translation charts (from paint colour to printing ink)
knocking around somewhere.

Thanks for that but 381 doesn't seem to be a blue.

That was actually meant to point you in the direction of references to
BS381C which has various "special" colours including "114 Rail Blue",
one such page being:-
<http://www.lynxpowdercoating.co.uk/bs_381c_colour_chart.html>
If you play with the spacing between BS and 381 and C you'll come up
with various other references, some indirect, to colour charts and
paint/ink manufacturers. There was at least one list knocking around
which had a "closest match" of Pantone to BS colours but I can't
remember if it was to BS381C or one of the other standards (BS4800?).

Thanks Charles - Sorry for being slow on the uptake!

I've actually now found Nanking Blue on <Materials-World.com> under
paint manufacturer Pratt & Lambert. However, I've no idea if that's
the same colour BR used. I'll give the reference to my printer
(person) and see if he can come up with a Pantone equivalent.

Any idea if there a list of BR Colours with BS numbers anywhere?

Thnx again,

JohnK

If it is actually a BS colour (e.g. Rail Blue, Middle Brunswick Green)
then IMU there should be a match by name but presumably if BR defined
any colours with enough tolerance there might not be a name match even
if the original spec was based on a BS colour (but fails the
definition due to the allowed variation). If there are such cases then
you'll probably need to dig out early equivalents to the current
Railway Group Standards. AIUI the current usage for BS 381 C is mainly
for powder/epoxy coatings but these were presumably not around when
e.g. [BR/LMS?] 541 Maroon was defined with possibly other now-defunct
standards lurking in the BSI's basement.
Further charts found include:
http://www.pentalvercontainersales.co.uk/BS.html
http://www.e-paint.co.uk/BS381%20Colourchart.asp?pType=&pFinish=
The references in:
http://www.mondoridotto.it/eng/cat15s.htm
do seem to suggest an earlier edition of BS 381 C with numbers below
100.
http://miniatures.de/html/ger/colour-british-standard.html
does likewise and actually refers to BS 381 of 1930 and 1939; also
mentioning BS 987C which would appear to be camouflage colours.
