AFAICT from previous announcements [and the SL RUS], from the May 23rd
changes these services split/join at Purley to reduce the numbers of paths
used into London Bridge.

However journey planners seem to show a change at Purley for all ex Caterham
services, wouldn't they normally show a service that joins all the way
through to a the final destination in 'public facing' systems and printed
timetables?

I expect that one of the trains will disappear from the 'internal systems'
at Purley, so this seems to be cockup rather than conspiracy...

How long does it take to do a split or join?

2 or 3 mins, probably diagrammed as 5 for a join. It is certainly within the
interchange time shown in the journey planners anyway...

When I've been in a rear unit that's split at Purley we've been there
for about five minutes while the leading unit is uncoupled and gets
itself out of the way.

I don't think anything is changing. In the peaks they already split/join
at Purley. Off-peak the trains are separate, however it is quicker for
Caterham passengers to change at Purley onto a fast service rather than
stay on the all stations stopper.

Yes the only issue seems to be that the up peak 'joiners' are being treated
wrongly as separate trains, requiring a change of train at Purley.

The main change to the off peak service is that the London Bridge to Sutton
service via Sydenham ceases to run to make way for the East London line. The
Victoria to West Croydon service is extended to Sutton to maintain the
frequency along that section. I don't think the Caterham line is affected.

Yes, we discussed that a few weeks back, but that wasn't the point of this
thread really. I was just pointing out that the planned _joining_ of
Tattenham Corner and Caterham trains wasn't being shown correctly in the
journey planners, with pax from Caterham being advised of a change onto the
Tatenham Corner train.
