Gascoigne Wood Mine - ruins or in use?

On the way to and from Hull today, I passed through (and on the way out
on 158 762, stopped in the middle of) Gascoigne Wood Mine. On the north
side there is a truly enormous "shed" - looked as if it could contain
about six entire HST rakes under cover side by side - seemingly still in
use, but in the foreground were numerous massive yet half ruined
concrete towers and chutes, on a truly gargantuan scale.

The whole place looked like a film set for "Reign Of Fire", yet on the
other side were numerous EWS wagons and several locomotives, seemingly
going about normal bulk freight business.

What is the story, and current status, of this place?

I believe that EWS are using some of the sidings as a staging post for
coal traffic from Scotland. Gascoigne Wood as a coal originating point
finished a year or two ago with the closure of the Selby coalfield.

Coal------+

I'm sure our decendants will be digging it up when the Ausies run out.

Unfortunately, by then, the surrounding land will have become the
seabed, with many metres of seawater over it. :-(

As other posters have mentioned, it was the railhead for the output of
the various drift mines in the Selby coalfield from the late seventies
until 2003, when the last of them shut down. Prior to that (from circa
1900 until 1959) there used to be a sizeable freight marshalling yard
on the site. These days, the sidings are used to stable trainloads of
imported coal en-route from Scotland to the East Midlands but the
loading bunkers and other mineral handling equipment are disused &
derelict.
