Discussion:
Ticket Punch shapes

I don't usually bother to look at my ticket when it has been clipped by
the guard. However last night I did (run out of things to read, and it
was dark outside). The hole in the ticket appears to be the shape of a
teddy bear. Is this unusual (am I seeing things) ?

Virtual mars bar to the first person to guess the company involved.

Last time I travelled on GNER I got a musical note shaped hole in my
ticket.

If it was GNER maybe they've got a new ticket puncher that does an array
of shapes :-)

No Mars bar I'm afraid. My recollection of having the ticket clipped
was that it was a simple single hole punch.

A friend of mine has had a ticket punched in the shape of a little steam
train. We surmised that the unusual punch was a gift to the inspector.

The old Edmondson company sold quite a variety, the idea being one
for each day of the month, I think. Have a look at the bottom
of a page compiled by myself at:

http://rylibweb.man.ac.uk/data2/spcoll/brown/edmondlist.html

Can't see a teddybear or train, but there's one that looks a bit like
a condom ;-)

Maybe they're like Rorschach tests? ;-)

I take it the numbers in the picture aren't specifically tied to the
corresponding days of the month (or 33 is the spare).

There's a Central Trains guard who uses an unusual set of nippers. He
told me they were originally his father's and came from Coras Iompair
Eireann. They leave a rather pleasing mushroom shape.

I've posted a couple of scans on t'Web, at

Wessex trains today took a 'teddy bear' chunk out of my ticket from Bristol
Parkway- then I noticed the floor of the 150 was littered with 'teddy bears'
everywhere.. Funny how you never notice until someone tells you.......

Not Wessex, but (geographically) close. It was FGW.

Don't tell everyone, they'll all want one.

Then there's the inky rubber stamp.

Top Tip - If you place the freshly stamped outward half of your ticket
next to the return half this will leave an imprint, thus saving the
guard having to stamp your ticket on the return journey.
