I see a Great British Rail Sale is now being promoted. Is this what
the marketing people call a 'soft launch' for Great British Railways?

Didn't they do a similar thing last year?

According to the person who told me about this half an hour ago. "Yes".

And the year before that, etc

No, I think it’s years too early for that. It may simply be a test for
price elasticity.

The tests in Scotland and London showed that lower peak prices didn’t
increase travel much, if at all, and maybe this is a similar test?

It just seems to be a marketing attempt to sell unpopular times and to seed
the perception that rail travel isn’t expensive. I’ve had a look at EMR
Inter City and the offerings are very thin. Also, Railcard discounts don’t
apply. And the 50% off strap line - 50% off what exactly?

Anytime fares, presumably.

You’d achieve a much bigger percentage discount if you compared the
cheapest Advances on the MML vs the very highly priced Anytimes, even
without a sale.

The Scotland trials in particular were probably doomed to failure, as
they occurred at a time when services were most unreliable, with
numerous cancellations. How many are going to make additional trips when
they never know when they will get back home ?

The Scotrail trial collided with the Scottish Government having to make
emergency budget cuts. It was never going to survive, regardless of any
reasonable outcome.
